of the long ridge of Druim Fada above Corpach


The Great Glen

( Glen Albyn - Gleann Albainn /

Glen of Scotland or Glen More )

This is a series of glens running 100km

from Inverness to Fort William .

The Great Glen follows a large geological fault

known as the Great Glen Fault.

This bisects the Scottish Highlands

into the Grampian Mountains to the southeast

and the NW Highlands to the northwest.

This long distance walking route
 covers 73 miles ( 117km )

 from Fort William
via Loch Ness to Inverness.

 It takes 5 to 6 days
to walk the whole route.

It may be done in short sections
 over a longer period.

Sròn a’ Choire Ghairbh ( 937m, 3074ft )
and Meall na Teanga
are two Munros
 above the Great Glen.

 They are joined by the col Cam Bhealach
 and are normally climbed on the one outing.

They are known as the Loch Lochy Munros.

Loch Ness is the second largest loch
 in Scotland by surface area
 at 56.4 sq km ( 21.8 sq miles )
 after Loch Lomond
-  but the largest by volume
 due to its great depth.

Loch Ness is renowned for its legendary
 Loch Ness Monster ( " Nessie " ).

The canal was constructed
in the early nineteenth century
